I always begin by figuring out how I can best teach a student by asking them their interests and goals for singing; whether they want to sing jazz or provide vocals for their rock band, or learn to sing classically, etc. For all students who are atleast in their teens or older, I begin by describing how singing works and talk about the function of the body in singing. The teaching experience I have, started at the university, with some colleagues that wished to learn to sing better or to just for Hobbie. For the past 5 years I have helped many singers, professional and young students in different styles of music, in classical, pop and mariachi. As a social service for my university I gave lessons to kids, and conducted choral pieces with senior students and adults. . I really desire the child to enjoy lessons. I like to build their confidence that they are achieving. I'm strict in how I teach the language of music. I don't half way teach and desire my students to be able to sight read music and understand timing. If i have a student that doesn't understand I explain in in math and they have all understood how important timing is. For classical and opera singing, I teach a healthy Bel Canto technique rooted in the Italian school of singing. I am also skilled in teaching SOVT style, but I typically avoid it with beginning singers. For musical theater and pop, I teach healthy belting techniques that preserve vocal quality and focus on a connection to the chest and body, alleviating vocal tension. For my guitar students, I teach fingering techniques and basic chords first, and then I focus on giving each student a basic repertoire--several pieces they already know and like to showcase their abilities and track progress.
