For beginning students I like to start with a method book, such as "Tradition of Excellence". This allows students to start from the very beginning, especially if the student does not have previous music reading experience. I teach reading and playing hand in hand so that it becomes a memorized process. After working through the method book, I will create individualized lesson plans, to include solo repertoire, band music, or other methods books. Read More

For humor, creativity, and fun are a big part of how I teach. At the same time I am serious about being disciplined in regular practice. I try to find out what my students are passionate about and use that as motivation. One thing I do compared to my past teachers is use technology. Frankly this technology did not exist when I was young! I often "sample" musical phrases and have them play on a loop. Read More
Instruments: Piano Guitar
I typically use Mel Bay's Modern Guitar Method for beginning guitarists and the Suzuki Method for beggining pianists. For students first learning music, I make sure to include solo pieces that the student is interested in and other custom written fundamental lessons in addition to these resources. Once they reach the point that they have a solid grasp of their instrument, we focus more closely on learning pieces and concepts that reflect musical situations in which the students sees themselves; be it playing solo, playing and singing, accompanying other instrumentalists or vocalists, or playing in an ensemble or band. I always try to guide my instruction in a fun and engaging direction to keep the student interested and motivated to get better. I am able to do this by being energetic and enthusiastic about my teaching and I feel its important to make the material matter to the student. When a student has confidence in their abilities they are able to achieve much success on their specific instrument. As I also previously mentioned, getting to know what inspires a student and knowing them on a more personal level helps develop a better student/teacher relationship and thus yields a better outcome on the instrument. Instruments: Violin
I find joy in helping students achieve their goals. I always aim for high quality, but also make the process fun. If the goal is to sound professional, I make sure we spend a good amount of time working on scales, etudes, and learning the essential classical music like the Bach six Sonatas and Partitas. I like the Galamian violin playing methods, and find them very effective to teach. I do this with almost all levels of students, as it solidifies the technical skills of a performer, allowing them to express themselves musically. Read More
Instruments: Lute Double Bass
For absolute beginners, I begin with the Sassmannshaus double bass book alongside other materials that help to connect musical ideas with something we already know well: speech. I believe that learning music is just like learning another language. We already know how to communicate effectively, we just need to learn how we can effectively translate those thoughts into music. Just like any language, music is structured in its own manner. Read More

I'm a dedicated teacher, interested in teaching a variety of guitar styles (jazz, rock, traditional folk, etc) to students at all stages of musical growth. I recently graduated from the New England Conservatory of Music, where I studied Contemporary Improvisation and Music Theory, and received Pi Kappa Lambda honors. I emphasize an aural approach to music making, based on developing a relationship between one's ear (as expressed through the body - the voice, clapping, even dancing) and the guitar. Read More
