For beginning students, I use the Hal Leonard Basic or Kids Guitar Method because it is such a good introduction to the instrument. For bass and ukulele I also use the beginner Hal Leonard Method books. For more advanced students, I first get a sense for what they want to learn and where they want to go, by asking them some questions about their previous education, what songs they like to listen to, and any problems with practicing or grasping the material, that they may have experienced. Singing is a difficult skill to teach. Our instrument is internal and is affected by our emotions, stress level, how much sleep we've had, even what we ate for breakfast! Because of this, I feel it is important to maintain a comfortable environment. I encourage my students to let go of their self-doubt and allow themselves to make mistakes. For more advanced students, I like to lean towards assigning some transcriptions to learn, and hand-picking what artists' playing will benefit my students the most. For all students, I also enjoy diving into some music theory and explaining why things work and why things in music make sense!
