I am an enthusiastic drummer of 10 years who has recently learned how to play the guitar, bass, piano, and how to sing. I have played both drum set and percussion in a variety of formats including: wind ensemble, jazz band, African drumming ensemble, marching band, and in my personal rock band. I like to begin with the basics of singing technique, sight reading, and music theory. In order to be a successful singer, one must be proficient in all of these! I like to assign music by the second or third lesson, depending on the student's readiness and ability. I typically assign one classical and/or one musical theater song, depending on the student's interest. I start with only these two genres because I feel that singing something that the student can hear on the radio can be difficult to sing while implementing the new technique they are learning in lessons with me. I opened a small music studio in September of 2017, with some borrowed lesson books and just a few students. Since then, my studio has doubled, and my students have shown consistent progress. As an instructor, I don't merely teach concepts, pieces, and theory; I teach my students strategies to problem solve, overcome challenges, practice effectively, and become lifelong learners. Along the way, my students learn fun, familiar pieces that they enjoy, play games that teach music theory or test their note-reading abilities, and have multiple opportunities to perform for friends and family. I approach teaching by working closely with each student to figure out their goals and interests. I introduce concepts gradually, building upon the foundation we have built in past lessons. I set realistic practice goals, understanding that we all have busy schedules. I usually assign 1-3 concepts for students to work on at home, at their own pace. Watching students grow is wonderful and immensely gratifying. For young beginners of piano, I start with Edna Mae Burnam's Step By Step Book 1, as it begins right away with basic reading of notes and music. From there, I progress into the Faber Piano Adventures Series. Adults will start with the Alfred Adult Piano Course. Voice students are welcome to choose one song each cycle, while I choose two. It's important to me that they get to express themselves and what they like, while also learning new pieces for their repertoire. Read More
