During school, and immediately upon graduating, I was fortunate enough to see my interest in music and theatre education realized in my work opportunities. I like to begin with the basics of singing technique, sight reading, and music theory. In order to be a successful singer, one must be proficient in all of these! I like to assign music by the second or third lesson, depending on the student's readiness and ability. I typically assign one classical and/or one musical theater song, depending on the student's interest. I start with only these two genres because I feel that singing something that the student can hear on the radio can be difficult to sing while implementing the new technique they are learning in lessons with me. I began teaching over 20 years ago with a focus on early childhood and beginning piano lessons. I have had great success working with young students by providing a variety of activities each lesson and making sure that learning music is a joyful experience. Music theory, ear training, flash cards and rhythm exercises with percussion instruments are just a few examples of lesson activities that are included in addition to the core elements of proper technique and music literacy.
