For beginning students who are children (3-7 years old), I typically start with the nice songs, which involve dance, animal sounds, musical games, simple percussion instruments, clapping, funny- playful movements. With the older children (8-14) we start learning staff, keys, music notes, basic scales, more complex songs, but still keep the playfulness. I find it is important to provide structure and a framework for learning, and for piano we begin with one the standard piano lesson series - whichever seems to appeal to age and preference. I double majored in English and Music and took part in activities such as the Chinese Universities Shakespeare Festival as actor and assistant director and musical productions at Yip's Children Choral and Performing Arts Center. I have furthered my training in Austria (Mozarteum International Summer Academy), Italy (Amalfi Music Festival, Music Academy International), and the States (SongFest, OperaWorks Winter Intensive, Miami Music Festival). I always introduce my students, no matter the age, to the Vaccai Vocal Methods book. This book has many exercises that takes the singer through all of the facets of their voice, and helps them hone their skills.
