My love for singing started when I was eight years old. I grew up singing in the Los Angeles Childrens Chorus which gave me much experience as a working musician starting at age eleven. I sang alongside notable alumnus Billie Eilish, as well as with Gustavo Dudamel, the LA Phil, and the LA Master Chorale. I am completing my Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance from the University of Massachusetts Amherst this year and plan to continue my studies of voice and vocal pedagogy in my graduate studies. My teaching style is best referred to as a facilitator. Essentially, I promote self-learning, helping students develop critical thinking skills and retain knowledge that leads to self-actualization. I prefer to guide students by letting them think for themselves, pointing out when mistakes are made but also encouraging them to learn and grow from them. The draw back from this is that it can be a bit time consuming, but I feel that at the end of the day, this helps a student so that eventually they will be able to learn by themselves without a teacher. I find it is important to provide structure and a framework for learning, and for piano we begin with one the standard piano lesson series - whichever seems to appeal to age and preference. Some younger students respond well to a rewards system, while others are naturally self-motivated. I love seeing my students learn and progress! That's why the student and I set goals for the student, whether it's learning a new song, practicing a certain amount of minutes a week, or auditioning for something like a musical or talent show! Setting small goals like these helps the student feel accomplished, and want to continue to work on their new found skills. The most important part of singing is making sure no harm is ever being done - so healthy technique is the key, then, we start to focus on depth of sound, etc. I try to help my students find a way to make singing as natural and simple as possible, without overthinking and becoming obsessive about rhythms or pitches. Of course everything should be accurate, but the more the vowels are forward (like in speech), the jaw and tongue can move freely and independently (just like when we yell), and the breath is constant, then everything will be in tune.
