As a guitar teacher, I like to start with getting the student accustomed with each string, including how to tune a guitar and how to play different notes on each string. Next, I start teaching chords by starting with E minor and then moving as little as possible with the fingers so the student can understand the relation between certain chords. I will be the first to admit I don't have a set method for teaching. However that is because I choose different methods based on the student. Every child, adult, teenager, etc learns at a different pace, has a different educational preference and I adjust myself to meet the needs of the student. Some will learn better by ear, others will learn through a traditional study of notes. I have access to every jazz real book, and have many different lead sheets to tunes that aren't even included in them. I also have access to many different musical theatre books for all different voice types. I also tend to be a visual instructor , meaning I like to use tricks to teach students different vocal technique. I am a life-long musician [age 5 - present] from a family of musicians who have played with everyone from Fanny Brice (my grandfather) to Benny Goodman (my mother) to Steve Miller (myself). I attended Berklee College of Music in Boston , MA from 1975-1979 and left (5 weeks short of my degree) to perform in a rock band who toured for 5 years in the US and Canada.
