Instruments: Piano Voice
For piano- I teach out of several method books- Faber, Bastein, John Thompson and Alfred's. I also implement Dozen a Day for piano technique and Hanon and scales. I use Czerny for the intermediate student. For voice- I work to build a solid understanding of breath, posture, vowel sounds and shapes, singing legato, etc. I believe a classical technique in both instruments is the best foundation for growth into any style. For my voice students I prefer to work within genres that the student likes; I did not like being forced to sing certain songs when I was studying voice, so I would not want to do that to anyone else! My flute students I like to work with the Rubank method books - from beginner to advanced; they offer the most comprehensive approach to playing the flute. For piano students, I prefer to use the Piano Adventure Series by Faber. Read More

I've started teaching way back before I got into Berklee College of Music, when I was already teaching my younger brother who was 4-5 at that time. Then when I started teaching was about 4 years ago. I never realized how much both the teacher and the student could learn at the same time, not only I learnt how to teach people better, but I also kind of learnt music in different ways by teaching it in different ways to different students. I start by finding the things students like most about their instruments and given style to learn. We then try to pick apart and play based off of that. Certain techniques facilitate practical application. For instance, If a student is getting ready for an audition, there are techniques where the student can learn how to cope with the anxiety. For my jazz students, I always start them off singing simple standard tunes that many people are familiar with. I have access to every jazz real book, and have many different lead sheets to tunes that aren't even included in them. I also have access to many different musical theatre books for all different voice types. I'm working on getting more piano books in my library, but I am a friend to many professional pianist that are able to provide a variety of texts to me which helps me more than I know. Read More

My teaching philosophy can be described as 'one step at a time.' For me personally, some elements in my playing took a long time to develop, and nothing happenes overnight. I like to take elaborate steps with my students so that they have building blocks to continuously improve, while also ensuring them that progress is not always linear! I always like to hear how my students play in my first lesson to see what they know, and what they enjoy, and that helps me craft my plan to instruct them based on what they need and what they love! Instruments: Voice
For beginning students who are children (3-7 years old), I typically start with the nice songs, which involve dance, animal sounds, musical games, simple percussion instruments, clapping, funny- playful movements. With the older children (8-14) we start learning staff, keys, music notes, basic scales, more complex songs, but still keep the playfulness. If I teach in person - I usually play guitar, so I can move with the students. Teenagers (15-18) are abe to set their own goals, but they're still following the basic music theory approach. Read More
