I usually try to set small goals for my students each week especially for kids as a new instrument can seem like a daunting task. Something I like to do is encouraging a students own creativity and get them to try writing their own pieces or songs. Something I find helps a lot especially with kids is acknowledging their accomplishments because it will encourage them to progress in learning. Another thing that works a lot with kids is making a game out of practicing, these kinds of things will really access their creativity. Read More

It really all started back in 1994, in the small town of Mays Landing, NJ when my mother first signed me up for piano lessons with my first teacher Fred Rushmore (a.k.a. Mr. Fred). I studied hard with him for over 10 years when I started accompanying the Oakcrest High School choir under the direction of Charles Bass. I learned a lot about playing with others there ultimately preparing me for my journey ahead in college. Read More

I began teaching voice in 1998 and have had a few students ever since. I had a previous career in furniture conservation and taught classes in that field too. I teach in my home studio, or I go to students' homes, which ever works best. My students have ranged in age from 6 to 85. I find they make the best progress if they can make some time to practice regularly: I endeavor to ensure that the student has repertoire that they find interesting and fun, and that will stretch them. I do tend to assign, as mentioned elsewhere, listening homework. I do this because I've seen it help students learn what they want to and need to learn faster as well as help students learn to like, love, or at least appreciate new things. The main point here is that every student is complex, difficult, and hard insomuch as teaching method required, but my passion is so great that I don't see issues or problems but rather new opportunities to get students excited about learning and demonstrating what they've learned. I started voice lessons the year before I went to college. I always loved music and singing, no matter the genre. I fell in love with opera shortly after starting at Westminster and found my passion in performing the classical art form. I have been fortunate in that I have always been surrounded by amazing teachers who were passionate and driven. They always pushed me past what I thought I was capable of and guided me along the way. It's important to me that students are invested in their own lessons, and what this means will differ from student to student. For some five year olds, that may be simply participating in the whole lesson and practicing a few minutes per week. For others, it may mean being challenged with advanced materials. Each student will receive a unique repertoire and lesson based on ability and interests. I focus on technique, then repertoire, then theory, then review for a 30 minute lesson, and younger students will often get a fun music-based game at the end if the lesson has been fruitful. I try to incorporate different exercises for each piece of music to keep things interesting for my students. I believe active physical engagement of the body is important to achieve freedom for the voice. This is particularly helpful for younger children to keep their minds from wandering during the lesson. I often ask for feedback from the students, to check in on how they are feeling physically and vocally. During our lessons, I hope to train up students to be creative thinkers and discerning individuals so that they can find their own authentic interpretation of the song. Read More
