It's important to me that students are invested in their own lessons, and what this means will differ from student to student. For some five year olds, that may be simply participating in the whole lesson and practicing a few minutes per week. For others, it may mean being challenged with advanced materials. Each student will receive a unique repertoire and lesson based on ability and interests. I focus on technique, then repertoire, then theory, then review for a 30 minute lesson, and younger students will often get a fun music-based game at the end if the lesson has been fruitful. I usually try to set small goals for my students each week especially for kids as a new instrument can seem like a daunting task. Something I like to do is encouraging a students own creativity and get them to try writing their own pieces or songs. Something I find helps a lot especially with kids is acknowledging their accomplishments because it will encourage them to progress in learning. Another thing that works a lot with kids is making a game out of practicing, these kinds of things will really access their creativity. Read More

It's a good comprehensive approach for an older person. Then the same applies to music literature books and recitals. For voice I follow the same general rules for younger singers and adults. I use vocal exercises appropriate to their level and age. We work on breathing and proper support for the voice, as well as vocal health. Consistency helps the student improve and get more comfortable with the act of singing. Read More

I have been teaching over 8 years. I had the privilege to teach at a very young age at my teachers’ request. I tutored students who needed extra help, or had failed their exams. I taught oboe, piano, solfege, harmony and ear training. At the time, I didn’t know how much responsibility I was taking on. But, after seeing all of them pass, I realized I could do more than help them succeed in one class. Read More

I began teaching when I was a freshman in High School and I continued with a full-time load of students throughout all four years because of how much I loved it! Eventually adding some beginner adult students into my rotation of kids as well! I taught a few college level students throughout my college years whenever I could and took on summer students during my breaks! Now that I am done with college I am very excited to begin teaching students of all ages again and sharing my love and appreciation of music with them. Read More

Instruments: Voice

The most important part of singing is making sure no harm is ever being done - so healthy technique is the key, then, we start to focus on depth of sound, etc. I try to help my students find a way to make singing as natural and simple as possible, without overthinking and becoming obsessive about rhythms or pitches. Of course everything should be accurate, but the more the vowels are forward (like in speech), the jaw and tongue can move freely and independently (just like when we yell), and the breath is constant, then everything will be in tune. To begin with, I teach my students how to develop their own warm up method which includes breathing and stretching, vocalizations and good old fashioned solfege. You will learn to understand your own vocal mechanism and how it resonates, as well as how breath support works, and their effects on the singing voice. My teaching style is customized to the student.  I encourge working with scales, rhythms, improvisation, ear-training, also working with and learning songs. Read More
