For beginning students who are children, I typically start with the music theory basics which will always serve as a strong background to their music knowledge and overall muscle memory. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. For Jazz students I use The Real Book Vol. 1 For most students a fundamental part of understanding music and the instrument itself is music theory. Students will be given some basic music theory and reading skills to reinforce their guitar training. The most important thing to me is that the students learn and play music that they want to study.
