My lessons are very structured, but within the structure is a lot of freedom. An hour long lesson might look something like this: First 10 min.: Warm-ups, discussion about posture, hand position and muscular/skeletal health while playing. Next 10 min.: Performance of previous weeks assignments, with discussion about whether preparation was adequate, what was missed (usually dynamics and other articulations) and what could be done to improve. Next 10 min.: Based half on performance and half on my own ideas, work on a number of techniques to strengthen the weaknesses the student is facing. Read More

Nothing is more rewarding than seeing a student progress, or better yet, develop a love for music. When my students succeed, I feel as though I have. I feel as though every student should progress at their own pace and music especially should not be something that stresses the student out (especially when it is art). I have had many teachers that were very old-fashioned and harsh in their ways and this can give the student a distaste for music. Read More

For beginning students I prefer to use either Alfred's, Mel Bay, or Hal Leonard method books. I generally stay away from method books that use guitar tablature because I find that student will prefer to read the tablature instead of standard musical notation. Tablature is a good way to easily show how guitar parts are played, but is not useful when teaching standard notation, music theory, harmony, etc. In addition to using a method book, I will also teach the student popular songs, which is a great way to start teaching chords and song structure in addition to keeping the lesson fun and the student engaged. I have a deep and passionate love for all things music, whether it's teaching, performing, writing, or listening, and I love being able to share that with my students. I did my undergrad program at UMass Lowell and have achieved my Bachelors degree in Music Studies. I currently still attend the University, where I am striving to get my Masters degree in Music Teaching. Outside of school I enjoy writing and recording my own music, and I occasionally play live shows when I can. Read More

When I was fourteen years old, my older brother brought home an old acoustic with only the two lowest strings on it. I started noodling around with the bass parts to Beatles and Motown songs and became a bass guitarist! Now hooked on music, I became a guitar player, graduating from strumming at a poolside party to learning by playing (and teaching) in a host of rock and roll bands. Read More
