ABOUT
Degrees / Training / Special Info:

BA, Berklee College of Music

Overview:
I have been playing music for over 30 years, starting with the drums at age 12, and then guitar at age 14. I attended Berklee College of Music and graduated cum laude with a B.A. in Professional Music in 1995. My main areas of focus while in college was jazz composition and performance. I have been teaching professionally since 1996, and have since picked up other instruments such as bass, piano, and alto sax. On my free time I like to compose as well as play live. I love all styles of music including jazz, blues, rock/metal, and classical, and I like to incorporate these styles into my playing and composing.
EXPERIENCE
I started my teaching career in 1996, teaching at the same music studio where I took lessons when I was younger. I try to carry some of the teaching techniques that were shown to me when I was taking lessons into my own style of teaching. This includes making the lesson fun as well as educational for the student. Daily practice is strongly encouraged, as well as playing with other musicians, recitals, and writing their own songs. While studying at Berklee College of Music I was involved with various projects including recording in their amazing studios and playing with musicians and bands of different stylistic backgrounds.
METHODS USED
For beginning students I prefer to use either Alfred's, Mel Bay, or Hal Leonard method books. I generally stay away from method books that use guitar tablature because I find that student will prefer to read the tablature instead of standard musical notation. Tablature is a good way to easily show how guitar parts are played, but is not useful when teaching standard notation, music theory, harmony, etc. In addition to using a method book, I will also teach the student popular songs, which is a great way to start teaching chords and song structure in addition to keeping the lesson fun and the student engaged.
LESSON STYLE
I like for my students to develop a passion for music by showing them what can be accomplished with a little hard work and discipline. My method includes teaching them the fundamentals of music, such as reading, harmony, theory, and songwriting, while at the same time showing them how to play their favorite music while applying these fundamentals. Making the lesson fun is absolutely essential! I believe being flexible with my teaching style accomplishes this without being tedious or "boring" for the student.

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
