I have over 12 years teaching experience both piano and voice to students of all levels and ages. When I work with a student, my first goal is to establish a positive, open dialogue where students feel comfortable asking questions, trying new techniques or styles, and stepping outside of their comfort zone. From there, I prioritize developing a healthy technique in both singing and playing piano, emphasize musical literacy where we regularly work on reading notes on a modern staff notation (with all the accompanying vocabulary), and explore a wide range of repertoire that speaks to the student. My teaching experience dates back to my highschool days. I began teaching volunteer at the age of 16 in the girl's orphanage. I taught private guitar and vocal lessons. I started teaching professionally during my second year of college at the age 19. I worked as a part-time vocal coach for actors in a professional drama theater. I do tend to assign, as mentioned elsewhere, listening homework. I do this because I've seen it help students learn what they want to and need to learn faster as well as help students learn to like, love, or at least appreciate new things. The main point here is that every student is complex, difficult, and hard insomuch as teaching method required, but my passion is so great that I don't see issues or problems but rather new opportunities to get students excited about learning and demonstrating what they've learned. I believe music should be fun and the process of studying it should be fun. But like everything else, it has challenges, and I think the fun part should be finding solutions to those challenges. I will give them fun exercises and I will give them questions to think about.
