I prefer to do half-hour lessons for beginners and young musicians. After more lessons can be prepared, forty-five minute or hour long lessons are more appropriate. For trumpet students, I rely heavily on the Arban method for the essentials and then add other materials depending on the student's goals. I began teaching private voice lessons to high school-age children in 2016. Since then, I have had the opportunity to work with people ages 5-30. The Metropolitan Opera Guild was an excellent teaching experience, where my mentors included teachers at Lincoln Center and New England Conservatory alumni. As a participant in NEC's Vocal Pedagogy program, I had the experience of teaching lessons to my colleagues in NEC Opera. The method of teaching is as follows: 1) assess where the student is in music and in life, 2) ask about goals in music, 3) formulate objective to reach those goals, 4) rethink things when needed (students aren't cookies, so I can't use a cookie cutter).
