I am interested in the individual growth of my students. I encourage exploration and learning through experiences, and if my students leave my classes with a little more knowledge and a great deal more wonder, I consider it a success. I like to follow my students down the tracks they are interested in and then choose to broaden the path once we are there. From this place I have written a 12 page chart featuring a Justin Bieber tune, written a Britney Spears song into Swing, put a Miranda Lambert song in five, and arranged an original by The Script in a Latin feel. I started teaching privately as a student at Pacific Lutheran University. I taught a steady 4 students, while also doing coaching for the theater department when musical season came along. I have been sightreading music once before I could read English, and I am well-versed is several different sets of training booklets for piano. There are SO MANY ways to start learning music, so I don't necessarily believe in forcing students to read sheet music of classic standards. I started out with chords and tabs in middle school and that has given me the ability to figure out most basic-intermediate songs by ear. I went on to learn to read sheet music in college and if reading music is something that interests the student, we will of course pursue that together. Read More

For all students I use a combination of Alexander Technique, Lovetri Somatic Voice Work, and Kodaly Method. I believe singing is a full body experience and focus on maintaining a healthy body and mind. My lessons are student led. At the first lesson I will ask questions about the students goals and cater the lessons to the individuals needs and desires. Depending on what level students are working through in their development, we will spend time working on the physicality of technique: posture, healthy hand/arm/wrist practices, and breathing freely. I have performed at numerous venues, such as Stanford University, Benaroya Hall, and the Paramount Theatre. In high school, I won multiple awards and scholarships for my participation in school and community music programs. I have soloed with community and professional orchestras, including the Encanto Orchestra, the Issaquah Philharmonic, and the Rainbow City Orchestra. As a orchestra member, I have played with numerous professional and community orchestras in the Seattle Area, sometimes holding leadership positions - I currently play with the Everett Philharmonic. When I teach teenagers or adults I usually start with Alred’s Basic Adult Piano Course Book, as well as a music theory book that is suited to the student. I like Alfred’s series for the young beginner as well, but have also used the Bastien series. For voice students I use a warm up book and a sight singing book. My students keep a music notebook of the week’s assignments in which I also make music theory notes and explanations. Read More
