I'm a passionate music educator with considerable experience as a teacher and performer. I graduated from the University of Arkansas in 2005 where I studied music education with an emphasis on trombone. Since graduation I have been fortunate to have many opportunities to conduct, perform, and teach music. I play a variety of different instruments and many different genres and styles. Whether it be conducting student ensembles, performing in small clubs, or singing with a chorus at Carnegie Hall, many of my best experiences have been through and because of music and I strive to direct my students toward their own great experiences.
My teaching experience began in high school, working with elementary and middle school students. It's there that I discovered my passion for helping others discover music. In my first full-time position, I was able to to lead the Greenland (AR) High School band to the ASBOA Sweepstakes Award, the highest honor for a school band in that state. Many of my students were selected to honor bands and several received college scholarships. More recently, I founded the Festival Chorus at Dove Science Academy in Tulsa, OK and I am now the Musical Director for First United Methodist Church of Tacoma.
For beginning students, I strive to teach the basics of music theory while learning the fundamentals of producing characteristic tone on their instrument. I typically start by working through the Essential Elements method book and introduce solos, ensembles, and orchestral excerps when appropriate. If the student is a part of a school or community ensemble, I work with the student on any pieces that their ensemble is preparing for performance. For more experienced students (especially adults), I tailor my instruction toward their individual goals, including genre specific techniques.
The dedication it takes to learn an instrument can help develop values that will benefit the student throughout life. Therefore, I believe that the process of learning music is more important than any particular performance that we work toward. We look forward to recitals and concerts, because they give our rehearsals direction, but it should also be emphasized that our most rewarding musical experiences may happen in lessons or private practice. Keeping this in mind, I make it a point to recognize all progress, no matter how small and all criticism must be constructive and must be done positively.
Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.Ok
Are you sure that's your only availability? The more availability you easier it will be to arrange a teacher for you.
