Instruments: Piano Guitar Ukulele
The first step of teaching an instrument to anyone is accurately finding out how experienced they are with the instrument. As far as beginners go, when I was taught piano I used Alfred's Basic Piano library, among other similar books. I felt nothing was forced or unnecessary with those books, and it gives a good opportunity to set a nice goal-oriented pace with moving on up in skill level all the way to the upper intermediate level. Instruments: Voice
I discovered my love for teaching voice as a graduate student taking pedagogy classes at CU Boulder. Every student brings a unique set of skills and needs to the table, I believe the best method of teaching is a flexible one, that caters to the student’s needs and goals. Teaching music is not only about notes and rhythms; it involves teaching the whole student. By taking voice lessons, the student will develop their singing skills as well as their listening skills, multi-tasking, working with others, and creative skills. Read More
Instruments: Piano Violin
I have found some terrific methods that get students playing VIOLIN well right away and building up their muscles and endurance. For the first 4 books students get to play along with CDs so their intonation is honed; they learn to "keep up with others playing" and they are encouraged to stick with it through each piece. Later, the harder things like reading music notation, scales, vibrato and the positions are added. Read More
Instruments: Piano Violin Cello Viola
Throughout the process, I also integrate tidbits of music theory and history to give the student a more well-rounded experience. As for guitar and piano, I normally take a more custom approach to teaching that tends to not revolve around any specific method book. However, I typically teach beginning pianists and guitarists how to read through and play simple pieces of music so that they understand the fundamentals before moving on to a mix of songs or pieces that I select and songs or pieces that the student wishes to play so as to keep things fresh and exciting. Instruments: Clarinet
I began playing the clarinet at the age of 12. My primary clarinet teachers were Jack Fisher, William Holman, Thomas Ridenour, Carmine Campione, Brian Moorhead, and John Yeh. I earned my B.M. and B.S. degrees from the University of South Florida and my M.M. degree from DePaul University. I have performed, and still perform, with many orchestras throughout Florida including The Florida Orchestra, Naples Philharmonic, St. Petersburg Opera, Sarasota Opera, Southwest Florida Symphony, Orlando Philharmonic, Brevard Symphony, Space Coast Symphony, and the Walt Disney World Candlelight Orchestra. Instruments: Piano Synthesizer Accordion Keyboard
My teaching experience dates back to my college days, as I began teaching private lessons part time 23 years ago, and have been consistently teaching students in my home studio for the last 20+ years. Encouraging regular practice on a consistent schedule is one of the key points I like to emphasize for younger students, as it tends to help the student progress and gain a passion for the instrument. I've also found that a combination of classical and modern music can go a long way in helping students enjoy the piano and motivate them to practice and continue to learn. Read More
