During my time at Oberlin I took a certification class specifically about string pedagogy.  I am very well versed in various methods of technique training for all instruments in the violin family.  With beginners I teach in a modified Suzuki method that includes music reading after a few months.  In general I focus on technique and then add in the more fun musical gestures.    I also teach ear-training long side the violin/viola study.  I believe that it is incredibly important in mental and aural understanding of music and necessary in creating a complete musician.  I love children and also received a BA in Psychology that mostly focused upon Developmental Psychology.  This aspect of my education aids in my understanding of a child’s mind and helps me to be sensitive to their needs as young learners.  I really care for my students and thing of teaching as a very personal interaction between two people.  For this reason I tend to go out of my way to make sure that they receive maximum care in the process of nurturing and developing them as a musician.

Flute Warm Ups: Simple Exercises for Practice

...with long tones. Throughout your entire warm up routine, you want to keep this ‘simple to complex’ theme in mind. When you’re practicing technical exercises, you want to start off slow and simple, and then gradually move to faster and more difficult. This will help ensure accuracy and ultimate success.   Some examples of technical flute warm ups include running through your scales, arpeggios, etc. I’ve written out a few basic exercises that can serve as potential flute warm ups. Keep in mind, these are just examples; a template to help you plan your own warm up routine. What you utilize specifically depends... Read More

Violins for Beginners: To Rent or to Buy?

...for repairs yourself, buying is the way to go. But if you’re not sure you really want to stick with lessons for that long, renting, again, is the cheaper option when looking at violins for beginners. If you decide that you’ll only practice if you actually buy the instrument and need to justify having spent the money, then purchasing a violin may be the right choice. Consider your situation, and apply your personal economics as you see fit.     What’s So Important About Fit? Violins vary in length, width, and weight, even when they are labeled the same size. Parts of an Opera: A Quick Beginner's Guide

...the 17th century, who brought the overture to the forefront of operatic form though. In fact, he was the first composer to call his opening section an “ouverture” starting with his ballets in the 1640s.   Not only did he introduce the overture as one of the formulaic parts of on opera (operas henceforth needed an overture), but he also created a distinct kind of overture that we refer to today as the “French Overture.”   Lully’s “French Overtures” followed a fast-slow, A-B pattern in two parts:   His first section took advantage of a distinct dotted rhythm–give it a ... Music Lessons for Kids: How Young is Too Young? (or vice versa), then it’s worth considering the location for music lessons for kids. The travel time to the teaching location will also factor into whether your child has enough time to devote to music lessons, which I’ll elaborate on later in this article.   Do you currently have other students around the same age as my child? The teacher’s comfort level with teaching young children impacts your own child’s comfort level. Though it’s not necessary for the potential teacher to specialize in teaching young children, a teacher who currently teaches students your child’s age could open the possibility of doing group lessons with other children ... Testing Room Acoustics for Musicians

...It may sound like a difficult situation to control, however there are a number of identifiable factors that influence this.   Most notably, the shape of a room will determine how the sound waves bounce. Symmetrical rooms notoriously have poor acoustics. Rooms which are a perfect square or rectangle allow sound to reflect off walls and remain on a continuous path. This leads to the accumulation of certain frequencies in certain areas. An asymmetrical room will allow sound to bounce all over the place without building up.   The materials of the room will determine how easy it is for the sound waves ... Read More
