For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. I am able to teach any genre at any level. Read More

I believe patience coupled with encouragement can be a recipe for success. When the student develops their own passion for music and their instrument their abilities tend to soar. I attempt to set realistic goals for the student but I am very adaptable and flexible. I still remember being able to strum my first song on the guitar. After that I was hooked! I believe in understanding the fundamentals and learning the technical aspects are important, however I have seen firsthand how enjoying music and the instrument and being able to play a song and not just a scale can lead to an increased desire to play and learn more. I like to teach at your pace. If you want me to teach you songs, we can learn tabs and chords. Also, I can teach fundamental music theory which includes things like scales so you can solo on your guitar in certain keys of the song. The theory will also tell you which chords you can play, so if someone says play in G minor, you know what notes are the right ones to play. Read More

I'm a dedicated and unique instructor who enjoys sharing my love of music with students who are taking their first steps into the world of music. I've had some formal training in music theory and performance, but the bulk of my experience comes from good old fashioned performing. I have written original music, played with national and regional touring acts worked as a session musician and have been playing nearly every weekend at clubs in my area for the last ten years. I encourage lots of individuality and fun. Music is a way to express yourself. I'm never teaching for the purpose for the student to become better than others to win awards and perform at recitals. Self expression and achieving personal goals to me are far more important than winning competitions and on-paper accomplishments. I'll always tailor my lessons for each individual student, and I'll try my best to keep my lessons within the student's area of interest. Read More

Hello future students! I much enjoy sharing my experience as a creative musician to my students whether they are 5 or 55, beginner or advanced. I am a patient teacher and do my best to encourage each student to find themselves as unique learners (musicians) unto themselves. I graduated from Columbia College Chicago in 2002 with a BA focus on Music Composition. While recently living in NYC, I formed a 12-member saxophone orchestra, composed and recorded two symphonies, performed and recorded with the late Glenn Branca's 100 Guitar Ensemble, and provided live Sound Design for renowned poetess Anne Carson. I love seeing my students gain passion and find success when they learn a riff or a chord, because I know how I felt when I did it. It inspires you to learn more. I like to use the method of telling them something they did fantastic, something they could work on and end on something they really did awesome on. I want to know what inspires the student and what they want to play. Read More

“Wake Me Up” - Avicii

...This creates more energy and motion. Perfect for increasing the intensity of the song, especially during the chorus.   Basic Fingerstyle Technique I’ve included this section for those of you that may be interested in fingerstyle playing. The right hand is notated as follows: P = Thumb I = Index M = Middle A = Ring   I find that using a pick to strum the chords can be a little too harsh sounding for the mood of some songs. For that reason, I suggest developing your fingers to pluck and strum the chords. Let’s begin by assigning the right-hand fingers... Read More

How To Find The Motivation To Practice

...anything worthwhile in music, you’ve got to invest the time and the effort. But you also have to accept that you’re never going to be perfect. Falling short, messing up, and not getting what you want is inevitable in music and life. If you lead a life that’s purpose is to avoid mistakes and risk, you’ll probably just quit playing an instrument the minute you realize how hard it is. Coping with failure is an important part of learning. Failure is a motivating force that puts us in the right direction. Whether you’re a seasoned musician or someone totally new to music, it’s a ... How To Find The Motivation To Practice

...you have your heart set on learning how to play guitar, but the only instrument you can afford is one from Wal-Mart, then you have a challenging road ahead of you. In recent years, Wal-Mart, Best Buy, and Target have started to sell cheap guitars and keyboards that are nearly impossible to learn on. I’ve played guitar for 15 years and I can’t make a Wal-Mart guitar sound good, so chances are you won’t be able to either. If you’re serious about learning an instrument, buy a decent one to learn on. If you can’t afford to buy an instrument now, you can look ... Read More

Jazz Exercises for the Saxophone: An Introduction to Playing in 12 Keys

...to spend my lesson time on other, more fun things, I had to be able to get through my scales quickly and accurately. Feeling comfortable playing all of your scales is necessary and fundamental, and is a prerequisite to practicing the material I’m going to lay out in this blog.   Once you have your major scales down, what are some other basic exercises that can be practiced? Taking a few notes from a scale and practicing them in 12 keys can be less daunting and more practical in application. You would never play a C major scale in it’s entirely ... Read More

The Best Age to Start Viola Lessons

... What is the best age to start viola lessons? The viola is a beautiful instrument that is slightly warmer and mellower in tone than its smaller cousin, the violin. Parents deciding to start their child out on viola should know just a few things before beginning lessons. Our recommended starting age for the viola is five or six, though exceptions can certainly be made for a younger student who is capable of handling the instrument properly and with sufficient strength in the fingers and hands. The viola is held in the same way as a violin, but it is slightly larger and may be better suited for students already familiar with the violin. Child-size models of the viola are also less commonplace than for the violin. There are some care taking measures for the viola, including maintenance of the bow and strings, that may prove somewhat difficult for younger students. A lot of students begin formal viola training as they enter their school orchestra. While taking viola lessons, children will begin to learn how to handle the instrument correctly, read music, and develop their overall skills as an overall musician. ... Read More
