When I begin with a new student, I generally jam and analyze my student's abilities, skill level, techniques and interests/desires in music styles. When I have a good idea about my student's ability and skill level, we begin with focusing on what needs to be improved. For beginner children, I like to focus on the fundamentals and keep interest with keeping things creative, exciting and fun! I love teaching students privately one on one. My youngest student was 4; a Piano student. She was from a Russian family and didn’t speak a word of English. Teaching her was a joint effort between myself and the girl’s mother who did speak English; a very interesting experience. My oldest student was 86; a Guitar student. He had studied previously with another instructor and loved to play. I focused on material that would not only improve his abilities but provide him with something that he could play for people in his social groups. Read More

I usually balances the time by working first on fundamental/technical aspects of the instrument: intonation, articulation, rhythm, and tone; followed by study of the particular student's chosen repertoire, whether it be jazz standards, rock/pop/blues tunes, classical literature or etudes. I believe in teaching students to organize their practice time wisely, isolating specific issues on the instrument. Cultivating personal musical goals with each student is also very important, in order to maximize the student's enjoyment of the time they spend playing. Read More
