Careful attention is placed on each student to ensure a custom lesson plan. I always ask the student what their skill level is and what their goals are, and I use that information to create the right lesson for each individual. I also always encourage students to be honest about what they like and don't like about the lessons, and I am never bothered if a student doesn't like something or wants to do things differently. My teaching style is a combination of both specific repeating methods and occasional spontaneity. The methods I implement are designed to build on and use what has been learned in previous lessons; so that the end goal is always geared towards mastery of knowledge and skill. There is a lot of repetition involved as far as always referring back to previous lessons. I also implement games from time to time to help a student master a skill they may be having difficulty with; so as to dissuade discouragement and keep the the student engaged and interested. I typically begin with rhythm. The best melodies would not be worth anything if they aren't played with rhythm. After a student gains basic familiarity with their instrument I use a metronome (a musician's best and worst friend. The first lesson typically is to set expectations and evaluate the students level of guitar knowledge. For beginners, we start from the beginning utilizing Aaron Shearers method book. For the intermediate player, we find music that is appropriate for their level of playing while also focusing on reading music and music theory applied to the guitar. For advanced players, we begin by reviewing music theory applied to guitar and focus on music for their level of playing. advanced players will go through the same practices as a university student studying guitar performance.
