I had few teaching experience in the past; all of them are beginner students. I am currently working on my own teaching curriculum and materials. I have come up my own way to approach teaching music theory to students because traditional way of music theory teaching in school is too vague for most beginner students. In teaching my students, I prefer to teach them to "play by ear", because when they learn chords and songs, they are usually able to play a snog by memory after hearing it a time or two. I not only show them the chords, fret board, how to hold the guitar properly, how to tune the guitar; etc. but, I also issue them handouts of guitar chord illustrations, fret board charts, and chord changes with words to songs for them to practice on between lessons. For students older than 10 years of age, I will typically move into introducing basic chord and scale playing. I have found that students who are in the middle school to high school range have already developed an appreciation for some form of pop music, be it modern or older material from decades past. Music is like a language all it's own, and I try to teach it similarly to how we naturally learn language. Growing up we don't learn by grammar and rules, but by listening to others. I make sure they are prepared with everything needed to play songs/pieces, as well as all that is needed for improvisation and solos.
