I usually balances the time by working first on fundamental/technical aspects of the instrument: intonation, articulation, rhythm, and tone; followed by study of the particular student's chosen repertoire, whether it be jazz standards, rock/pop/blues tunes, classical literature or etudes. I believe in teaching students to organize their practice time wisely, isolating specific issues on the instrument. For violin I usually use Suzuki Method and will introduce etudes like Wohlfahrt or Kreutzer. I also have fun with Christmas music, pop and fiddle. If they are young children aged 4-6, I will use the "I Can Read Music" by Joanne Martin. For guitar I use a variety of different classical method and etude books. The first lesson typically is to set expectations and evaluate the students level of guitar knowledge. For beginners, we start from the beginning utilizing Aaron Shearers method book. For the intermediate player, we find music that is appropriate for their level of playing while also focusing on reading music and music theory applied to the guitar. For advanced players, we begin by reviewing music theory applied to guitar and focus on music for their level of playing. advanced players will go through the same practices as a university student studying guitar performance. For beginner students, it is important to start with the basic fundamentals and techniques, but once those are mastered, there is more freedom to explore. For intermediate students, we work on filling in gaps they may have in their current understanding of music/guitar, and anything else they want to work toward.
