I am a passionate pianist and organist--as well as vocalist--that loves working with students of all ages that are serious about learning their musical craft.  In 2004, I graduated from the University of Texas in San Antonio with a Bachelor's in Music Education.  My primary instrument is piano, however, I am well versed in my secondary instruments of organ and voice.  I frequently serve as an accompanist around the San Antonio area and play a myriad of musical styles from Bach to ZZ Top. I have been teaching continuously since 2002. I started by teaching undergraduate students at UT and continued in high schools and middle schools in the greater austin area. I encourage students to find the best fit for their interests and talents during lessons. Some students want to be able to sing better in church or school choirs, while others are interested in musical solos or college auditions. For students who are young children, I like to start working on fundamental musical and singing concepts, including posture, breath management, pitch matching, music literacy, and expression. I work with each student to find songs which are appropriate for their voice, and songs they are excited about working on. Depending on the age and personality, I cater each lesson to the individual. If they are younger students, I'll use Mel Bay or Hal Leonard books, but sometimes I will make a custom book that builds with their development and learning style. I believe reading sheet music is important, but understand that being able to play along with other musicians using ear training and improv skills, as well as reading chord charts, is just as necessary. I've had the opportunity to take guitar and voice lessons from a number of great instructors, and have learned a multitude of great methods from them. When learning the fundamentals of guitar, I find it easiest to first learn through visually learning the hand shapes and hearing the different notes and intervals. Opera is my first love, but I also teach a wide variety of styles (musical theater, pop, country) as well as general vocal skills and musicianship.
