I begin with a meeting. A meeting about you...How you are doing this fine day. We will make GREAT MUSIC together and learn more about music and the world's vibrations together. I want you to tell me what it is you want me to teach you, and in the process I will learn how you learn. You teach me while I teach you; then the music will flow from ALL DIRECTIONS! =) My philosophy is a simple one. "If you put the work in you will improve." We will go at the pace that you desire and what you show me you are prepared for. Read More

I am a graduate from Texas AM University Kingsville. I studied with soprano Dr. Melinda Brou during my undergraduate years. I received my BM in 2013, and I am now working on my MM at the University of Texas at Austin where I study under the direction of baritone David Small. My greatest experiences as a singer have been performing operatic and musical roles such as Danny Zuko in "Grease" (Laredo Community College), Papageno in "The Magic Flute (Texas AM University Kingsville), and The Learned Judge in "Trial by Jury" (Texas AM University Kingsville). My name is Dr. Lance R., and I am a professor of music. I have a strong academic background in music, with a Bachelors and Masters in music performance, and a Ph.D in Music Theory. I offer private lessons online and in my home studio for my primary instrument, singing, plus piano and saxophone. I offer a comfortable learning environment for students of all levels, from those who have never sung, picked up a saxophone, or touched a piano in their lives, to active performers looking to reach that next level. I have been teaching continuously since 2002. I started by teaching undergraduate students at UT and continued in high schools and middle schools in the greater austin area. I encourage students to find the best fit for their interests and talents during lessons. Some students want to be able to sing better in church or school choirs, while others are interested in musical solos or college auditions. I will work with you to find out where you want to go together and we will make a plan to help you get there. Read More

I believe that half of the joy of making music is sharing it with others. In 2011, I graduated from Howard Payne University with a degree in music education, where I often performed lead roles in production spanning from "Bye, Bye Birdie," to "Gianni Schicchi." I am currently pursuing an advanced degree in Vocal Performance and Pedagogy from UTSA, and am projected to graduate in Spring 2015. I have had the opportunity to perform both around the State of Texas, as well as in Italy. Read More

For beginning students, I usually start with a reputable method book that will allow them to advance in "grades" as the skills get better. At earlier stages of learning, the focus is on the technique towards learning the instrument. As a student progresses into intermediate and advanced stages, several pieces from the solo repertoire (and if available ensemble pieces) become part of the curriculum. Throughout the advancement in levels, I try to focus on selecting pieces that the indivdual student will have interest in while balancing pieces necessary for learning more difficult musical techniques. Much of my lesson plan is specific to the age, experience, desire and ability of the student, but the basics tend to remain the same. I try to craft dexterity and melodic exercises to unite the ear and fingers, while crating a basic understanding of the theory involved, a rhythmic exercise which teaches comping and time, and assign a song to work on between lessons. I refer to this plan as "Theory, Time Tune." This technique was effective when assigned to me and I still use it to guide my own practice. Read More
