I'm a classical singer with a Bachelor of Music in Education degree from the University of Texas at Austin. Opera is my first love, but I also teach a wide variety of styles (musical theater, pop, country) as well as general vocal skills and musicianship. I perform in professional Opera (Austin Opera)and light Opera productions (G.S.S.A.). I also sing in more Folk/Americana styles on a regular basis for a local church. Read More

My process is based on (but does not adhere strictly to) the Classical approach to Western tonal harmony and asks that the students develop certain fundamentals of technique and theory. In my experience, this structure creates the strongest foundation for pupils to build the rest of their musical lives on, whether professionally or solely for personal enjoyment. All of my students are on the fast track to studying music theory. Read More

My teaching experience is primarily from instructing at a band camp for multiple summers. Working with beginner level middle school students, it was my job to help them choose songs to play, learn their individual parts, and help them rehearse as a band. As a teacher, his use of exercises backed by scientific research coupled with an emphasis on increasing confidence and freedom in singing has helped his students achieve results in real time. For Chris, seeing his students gain access to new opportunities, learn step-by-step how to drop unhelpful habits and become skilled at balancing consistent practice with creative thinking are all part of what makes him so wholeheartedly engaged in teaching the art of singing. Voice instruction is every bit about personal growth as it is about learning the instrument. Being able to stand up in front of someone and express something is a vital skill in both professional and personal life. As such, I like to cater lessons very personally for each student. Some students will need to focus on technique, repertoire, and music theory, while others will need to work on his or her stage performance and musical interpretation. Read More

For beginning students, I usually start with a reputable method book that will allow them to advance in "grades" as the skills get better. At earlier stages of learning, the focus is on the technique towards learning the instrument. As a student progresses into intermediate and advanced stages, several pieces from the solo repertoire (and if available ensemble pieces) become part of the curriculum. Throughout the advancement in levels, I try to focus on selecting pieces that the indivdual student will have interest in while balancing pieces necessary for learning more difficult musical techniques.
