I love to see my students reach musical maturity. Therefore, even, a beginner will sound musical after just a few lessons. I always remind them to push forward to higher levels. I always advise them that practise is the key and the more they practice the faster they advance. Classes consist of warming up exercises, then the student works on the music assigned and the Instructor gives it a grade. Read More

For beginning students, I usually start with a reputable method book that will allow them to advance in "grades" as the skills get better. At earlier stages of learning, the focus is on the technique towards learning the instrument. Throughout the advancement in levels, I try to focus on selecting pieces that the indivdual student will have interest in while balancing pieces necessary for learning more difficult musical techniques. For beginning drum set students, the program I recommend is starting with Drum Set Essentials by Peter Erskine. As skills in rudiments and basic patterns develop, I go on to materials such as Syncopation by Ted Reed (reading, coordination, technique), and Stick Control by George Lawrence Stone (technique). For piano, I go over basic theory, major and minor scales, chords and arpeggios and work in Piano For Adults by James Bastien. Read More

I believe reading sheet music is important, but understand that being able to play along with other musicians using ear training and improv skills, as well as reading chord charts, is just as necessary. For younger beginners on piano I use the Hal Leonard series to start. For older piano students I use Faber Faber. For guitar and voice, I base my method on the students' interest. I feel that for a student to be successful and enjoy the instrument they are learning, they need to be learning a style that excites them. Read More
