Born and raised in Houston, Texas, I revealed great promise as a musician at an early age. Moving to New York in 1983, I became the first African American piano player to play for the Tony Award-winning production of “CATS” at the tender age of 16-years old. After a critically acclaimed 3-year run on Broadway, I returned to Houston and shortly thereafter earned my Bachelor of Arts in Music Performance from Texas Southern University in Houston, the same prestigious program that produced Kirk Whalum, Yolanda Adams and Lonnie Smith. For children, we'll begin with aiding the discovery of musical instinct. For adults, I start by becoming familiar with what kind of music got them curious. By looking at all its parts we can begin learning the fundementals and getting to a point of confidence in a solo or ensemble setting. As a teacher my goal is not to simply teach a student how to play or sing a certain song. My goal is to teach my students how to use the discipline of music to help them to develop their character. To that end I emphasize learning music fundamentals well and being able to put them into practice playing or singing in public at every opportunity. For very young piano/keyboard students, lessons go more smoothly if they know right hand and left hand, count to 10 and know ABC's. They learn to read music almost immediately, and I give them the tools to be able to pick up any piece of music and play it independently.
