Some students need explicit instruction and to be pushed, others need gentle guidance with time and space to work things out for themselves. Even though all students require different needs, I will usually start my lessons by warming up the voice with different exercises. After that, I will work on repertoire with the student. My favorite book for beginning singers is the 24 Italian Songs Arias. A lot of good habits and technique can be learned through repertoire. For beginning students, around ages 5-9, I start with easy songs, but also teach them how singing works. I like to teach technique, and help students improve in their singing. Once students have grasped the fundamentals of singing, I'll let them start looking at solo repertoire so they can practice for a recital performance. For intermediate and advanced students, I like to see what they are interested in to see how I can teach them, and be able to keep them more engaged. Read More
