My name is Dr. Lance R., and I am a professor of music. I have a strong academic background in music, with a Bachelors and Masters in music performance, and a Ph.D in Music Theory. I offer private lessons online and in my home studio for my primary instrument, singing, plus piano and saxophone. I offer a comfortable learning environment for students of all levels, from those who have never sung, picked up a saxophone, or touched a piano in their lives, to active performers looking to reach that next level. For beginners, I like to start with proper hand techniques so the student can begin playing a few beginner-level chords. Once a few chords are learned, I generally like to help guide the student in the process of writing their first song! No matter the length or complexity of one's first song, I've found it to be a very encouraging step in the learning process. From there, we move along according to the student's need or desire. I prefer books in the Bastien series and the Faber Faber series, but I have used a variety of courses with students, all with success. Read More

For beginning students who are children, I typically start with either Music for Little Mozarts Series or Piano Adventure Series with essential music theory related piano. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoires appropriate for their performance levels. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in first, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. Read More

After many successes, and many more failures, Ive learned what works and mainly what does not work. Ive always been the type of person to explore all options of solving technical or artistic issues in music. Ive been given many teaching tools from many different professors and have been teaching privately for around Ten years and in the public school system for around Three years. My teaching experience covers beginning players on violin, viola, cello, and piano to early advanced players on violin and piano. Read More

Nothing is more rewarding than seeing my students succeed in whatever they are passionate about. Whether that be making their Broadway Debut or learning to love music as much as I do. I encourage my students to set realistic goals for themselves at each lesson. I like to make each lesson fun but productive. I like to find commonalities in what I am teaching to their everyday life. With my years of experience both on the stage and off, I know I can give you or your child the very best training one has to offer! Read More

For absolute beginners I like to start with an interview to get to know who they are as an individual. From there, I will choose from a selection of beginner method books or craft my own method if I do not think that any existing method is effective. Once the student has grasped fundamentals, I start to introduce more standard repertoire. For all levels I like to heavily emphasize rhythm, theory, and listening, and will incorporate all of those aspects into every lesson. Read More

Does music run in your family? Tell us a little about your musical family members.
Well, not exactly... I come from a rather large family and instead of giving you a history of each family member's music performances, let me just tell you this:
Growing up, we regularly had "company" over (e.g., people from church, neighbors, relatives visiting, or friends from my parents' work, etc.) as well as friends of my 3 older brothers.
The stereo was usually on in the background during these times. My parents, being Boomers, have inundated me with many musical influences from their youth.
My older brothers exposed me to the most popular artists at the time. Music was also played in the car wherever we went.
All this is to say while there were no instruments involved usually - I was exposed to a lexicon of some of the greatest music of the 20th Century and it inspired me to make great music myself!
What is your favorite style/genre of music to play and why?
I prefer to play "GREAT" music - the exact genre doesn't matter!
While my formal education focused mainly on Western music through different time periods (e.g., Renaissance, Baroque, Classic, Romantic, etc.) I do ultimately prefer pop music of various styles from the mid-late 20th Century on up to today!
If you weren't a musician what do you think you'd be doing instead?
If I were not a musician then I'd still be teaching...the passion for education began in elementary for me. One way or another, I'll always be teaching!
However, there are other skills I have obtained. As a result of having to pay for college on my own (coming from a large family whose parents have no formal education), I didn't receive my bachelor's degree (in music education) until I was 26 years old. Most of my electives in my undergrad were computer programming courses. When I was an upperclassman in high school, the dot-com boom was in full effect. I learned BASIC of different kinds (e.g., QuickBASIC, etc.) as well as COBOL and Visual Basic (one of my favorite languages!). I even taught Web Page Design w/HTML to continuing education students when I myself was only 19 years old! As a private music instructor today, I design and code my website myself using HTML and JavaScript and no fancy software---just freehand using only Notepad!
Also, my investments perform at least as well as I do: I've been investing in stocks since I was 18 years old (1997) and in commodities (futures market) since 2000. Today, half of my income as a private music instructor comes from trading crude oil, gold and soybeans futures contracts on an almost daily basis. Doing what I do for a living provides me with the flexibility to be at home on my computer when regularly scheduled reports are released which provides an incredible amount of volume and opportunity to get in and get out of the market in a short amount of time, usually yielding as much or more as what I earn from lessons in an entire week!
