Overview:
I am a motivated, creative, and experienced singer and pianist, performing as a professional musician since the age of 17 in multiple musical theatre roles, a private musician for parties and weddings, and as a teacher for the last 10 years. I am a child at heart, so I get along very well (sometimes too well, it would seem) with kids, and enjoy connecting our music lessons to science, language arts, mathematics and history to enrich their overall edification. I also do enjoy working with adults, as they tend to practice more!
EXPERIENCE
I began teaching private lessons in 2006 while working for Walt Disney World Entertainment in Orlando, Florida. I have maintained a studio of at least two students everywhere I have moved, and most recently taught music for a Montessori program and comnnnity college in the Virgin Islands. I build healthy, classically trained voices that are capable of stylizing to fit any genre; and being a composer myself, I teach piano from a musically interpretive viewpoint. I’ve found that most of my students actually can’t wait to get home and practice what we’ve discussed in our lessons.
METHODS USED
With my piano students, I prefer to use John Thompson’s piano method books, along with performance study, listening, and impromptu music theory/acoustics lessons when the subjects arise. Depending on the practice habits of the student, they should have at least 2-3 non-method book solo pieces prepared within a year’s time. Each lesson is tailored to what he student enjoys, finds challenging, and ultimately will benefit from. My vocal students will find lessons crafted specifically to their current vocal abilities, working on a wholistic approach to singing including acting, prana, yoga, health and fitness, self confidence, lifestyle coaching, and of course, the act of singing!
LESSON STYLE
I have been described by more than one student and several parents who have observed lessons with me as “energetically laid-back”. I have a great passion for music, and it comes through in the excitement I share with my students, with the hope that it inspires them to seek greatness for themselves in all aspects of their lives. We will set goals together, track their progress and they will feel challenged and pushed at times, but empowered with the knowledge that anything can be overcome with patience, persistence, and practice.
