My teaching style is based on 3 of my core beliefs. (1) The student is the most important person in the class ( This is why I do not force a particular method on every student. I adapt to each student's learning style). (2) Music should be fun ( This is why I chose music that the student can relate to ) (3) Every task can be easy or difficult. Every single task has a pattern that, if you know it, makes the task very easy. ( This is why I reveal these patterns to my students and these patterns make them learn easily, naturally and rapidly)(Most of my beginner students learn to play a complete song with both hands in their very first lesson------Why?------PATTERNS ). In short, each lesson will simply include the use of traditional written and aural theory, scales, chords and arpeggios as well as cater to the genre/repertoire preferences and the student's own unique learning style and personality. I encourage effective practicing strategies during the lesson as well as communicate with the parents on how they might enforce practicing at home. Above all, the most important aspect of the learning process is to have FUN. Read More

My teaching experience dates back to my college days, as I began teaching private lessons part time 23 years ago, and have been consistently teaching students in my home studio for the last 20+ years. Encouraging regular practice on a consistent schedule is one of the key points I like to emphasize for younger students, as it tends to help the student progress and gain a passion for the instrument. I've also found that a combination of classical and modern music can go a long way in helping students enjoy the piano and motivate them to practice and continue to learn. Read More

All of my beginning piano students will be learning the five finger scales and hand placement. I will always integrate advanced theory techniques when teaching my students because I believe that this will be beneficial in the long run as they progress to intermediate and advanced levels. For advanced students, they will be expected to learn the notes on their own as per the standard of that level so that the lessons can be focused on artistry, performance etiquette, and interpretations. I began teaching private music lessons during my college days. I was taking music education classes along with my performance degrees and the combination of the classes made me feel like i could teach lessons in a new and innovative way. A big focus in my curriculum is music theory. Music theory is such an important backbone to learning your instrument. I feel very confident that students will feel a complete understanding of the pieces they work on, because of the emphasis we put on theory. Read More

Have any of your students won awards or been selected for special honors? How have they succeeded?
Yes, one young man in Mechanicsburg won special honors because of his successful piano career in high school. Unfortunately, He contracted AIDS and died as he entered college.
What do you think is the hardest thing to master on your instrument?
For me the most difficult was the fingering of difficult passages. That's why I stress this with my students. it was not always interesting but rather boring so it took an exceptional amount of discipline.
What musical accomplishments are you most proud of?
My solo senior recital in college for which I preparedI featured Brahms and Schubert both Romantic composers. the Schubert was particular to my soul, as it depicted a base roll which reminded me os someone with an addiction like my Dad. But the piece also had a melodic escape from the horror of being addicted which also depicted my Dad.
Why did you choose your primary instrument?
Availability mostly. We didn't have a harp, but we had the piano. But I always loved the piano music. It was an easy sell. I have always loved piano and it percussiveness but thought it would be smarter to major in organ. However the organ prof wasn't sympathetic to the young woman's goal to be professional and I thought it wiser to major in piano and minor in voice
When will I start to see results?
If you can identify a song's melody, or hear the child humming a piece they are working on, you can begin to claim them as results. If they don't express themselves, maybe in about 6 to 12 months.
Did you have a teacher that inspired you to go into music? How did they inspire you?
I had 2 teachers who inspired me to go into music, both piano teachers: Mrs, Stebbins always gave me more modern, familiar tunes to work on even if only on the melody to play for her and she was always enthusiastic when I played the tune by ear.Dr. Centrone in my advanced stages always allowed me to accompany his girl's chorus which was an honor and I played the solo spotlight in his recitals.
What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
Review our lesson no less than 4 times a week and not just before you come for your next lesson. good musicians learn little by little over a period of time with good hard work.
How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
If your child asks questions about their parents history, or "noodle" on the keyboard, show an interest in an older student of adult, you might want to begin the process. Interview a teacher, read up on some contemporary artists who have made it and your child likes.
