For beginning students (regardless of age instrument) I try to simplify the approach and work on a set of warm ups/exercises coupled with a performance piece or song that they can feel good about and lots of fun listening assignments. From there I have a few options of instruction methods that I tailor to the individual student. More intermediate/advanced students will not escape from some of the basics (metronome, scales, rudiments etc.) but will be met with many more choices of performance material based more on their individual goals. I have composed my own First Studies for Guitar. Read More

I keep my lessons very relaxed. I want the student to feel comfortable. This does not mean, however, that I do not hold high expectations for my students. I hold the students responsible for their own progress. If they don't practice, they do not improve. I make sure they and their parents (if applicable) know exactly what they should be working on each week, as well as areas that need improvement. Read More

I like to make sure that my students are actually learning the exercises rather than just going through the motions. If I find them making mistakes I stop them and ask them to explain to me what they are supposed to be doing. This helps me pinpoint whether they need further teaching or just more practice. I am very careful to try to catch and correct bad habits early before they become ingrained. Read More
