Much of my lesson plan is specific to the age, experience, desire and ability of the student, but the basics tend to remain the same. I try to craft dexterity and melodic exercises to unite the ear and fingers, while crating a basic understanding of the theory involved, a rhythmic exercise which teaches comping and time, and assign a song to work on between lessons. I refer to this plan as "Theory, Time Tune." This technique was effective when assigned to me and I still use it to guide my own practice. Read More

The ultimate goal that I have for my students is to see that they have the same passion for music that I found when I was at my beginning. I graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a bachelor's degree on Vocal Performance, and am currently a second-year master's student pursuing a degree in Vocal Pedagagy. I am aspiring to be an educator in the realm of community outreach, to be on the opera stage, and to produce and record classical, childrens, Christian, jazz and ethno-cultural sacred music. Along with pursuing a career in teaching, I am pursuing positions in the fields of acting and voice-over work, including character voices, commercial singing, and advertising, I enjoy acting, storytelling, inspiring audiences of all ages, and artful expression by medium of the written word. While I do teach students to read music and teach the theory behind tunes and compositions that we learn, I think that the MOST important element in anyone's pursuit of musical proficiency lay in the ability to connect what one hears to what one plays. Ear training therefore is a large component. I do use the time honored texts by Hal Leonard and Alfred publications or some from Mel Bay and those from Jay Traylor as well as many others such as the Real Book and Greg Fishman texts. Read More

I've been teaching voice and piano, both privately and in public schools, for 12 years in the Austin area. I have taught all ages and styles and am open to any kind of music. I believe in practice and routine as a foundation to learning, but also improvisation and experimentation. I learn best across multiple media and I LOVE using the internet and a variety of applications to supplement my student's studies. Read More
