Generally, my lesson style aims at preparing students with the basics of music making: technique, intonation, and tone, in order to promote music literacy and allow the student to play and work on classical masterpieces.I like to cater my lesson style specific to each individual student based on the students current ability and future interest. I am an experienced and patient teacher with strong academic background based in New York City's West Village neighborhood. I love music and have dedicated my entire life to the understanding and appreciation of the sonic arts. My favorite instruments are keyboards and drums. I have over 20 years of experience teaching piano and other music related subjects including music history, theory, and musicology. I have taught in private settings (at my studio and at my students’ homes) as well as at some of the most prestigious institutions of higher education in New York metropolitan area. Read More

In other words, I cater to each individual student, especially since no two musicians are the same. If a more advanced student is striving for something like NYSSMA or All-State, I would pace them and their lessons accordingly so that they will be ready in time for whatever they might be preparing for. However, despite this different approach, I would still work with them to understand their strengths and weaknesses with playing so that I can help them improve accordingly. Read More

I am a constructivist teacher. I like my students to drive their lessons. However, there is a structure to the lesson. There is always a warm-up, theory and/or sight-reading, and choice time, where the student works on something they have chosen, and then time to work on something I have chosen.\ Lessons always end on a positive note! Once the student has progressed to an intermediate level, I like to start introducing more advanced music theory and musical references to enable the student to start finding their own unique style. For advanced students, our focus is on perfecting playing technique and style, as well as continuing to expand our knowledge of music as an art form and an industry, and I speak with my students about the ways that they can use their talent beyond home, school, and the local gig venue. Instruments: Piano Drums
Because I teach such a wide variety of musical styles, my teaching style varies greatly from student to student. On Drums, I'm capable of teaching students up to extremely advanced professional level students, so I most often custom design my lesson plans based on the student's needs. I often will invent my own exercises for them, and also use many of the classic method books in the drum instructional canon of which there are simply too many to mention. Read More

I want to inspire my students and have fun with them. The most important thing about teaching music is making the students love music, and getting inspired and motivated is the only key to success. Regardless of Jazz or classical piano, I have always been inspired by my colleagues, teachers and my heroes. That inspiration was the main drive that stimulated and motivated me throughout the years. Once the student can build up the drive, the rest just follows. Read More

What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
Do it when you are most relaxed, and when the daylight hours are there. Don't practice when you are hungry or tired. Try to stick to a basic schedule. Try to push yourself to uncomfortable zones.
Work like this is a kind of job and the payment is your confidence in new ideas with regards to sound.
Exceptional work is done when you don't think too hard.
Meditation on your fluidity is key. In the mind's eye, see you smiling and relaxed in all motions of playing, sitting comfortably, and always focused.
How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
They will look toward the instrument and show interest in the sounds it makes. They will come to you asking if you can buy them a guitar or drums. Most young lovers of music will be a little obsessed with music on the computer, on tv shows and online. I think, for the most part, they show a kind of discipline and strong interest needed to learn the beginning stages of reading music.
They must also have the concentration exhibited with school work and study, that will reflect their ability to sit alone with an instrument and practice.
When will I start to see results?
Depends on the intuitiveness, natural ability, and discipline needed to move the learning forward in the first three months. I do see students with natural ability that don't even practice much with a month. The ones that have both strong innate talent and the ability to practice with the instrument at least 15 minutes a day as someone under the age of 10, as the most exceptional way to jumpstart results and get the confidence needed to show songs and tempo, and technique come to fruition. I like to say, you can be good fast if you love playing even when the teacher doesn't tell you to.
Did you have a teacher that inspired you to go into music? How did they inspire you?
My very favorite teacher, Mr. Colombia, was my grammar school music teacher. He was highly talented and taught us how to sing Beatles songs and wrote spring choral plays with scriptwriting abilities that were moral, ethical and beautiful. He saw talent in members of my family and I loved him for encouraging us and being a wonderful and caring human being. The world lost him ten years ago and I think of his often.
My piano teacher, Mrs. Moris was a kind and funny human being that saw my natural ability and nourished me with different kinds of exercises above the usual note reading. She taught me ear training as well at the age of 9.
I went on to further my musical education at the age of 17 with a woman named Jenny, I called her, and she got me deep into music theory and helped me learn an entire Mozart Sonata which is one of my favorite classical piece of music of all times.
