I believe that as an instructor, it is my goal to take a student who has a general interest in music and develop that interest into a life long passion for being creative with his or her instrument. That being the case, I have found that there is not a one size fits all approach to teaching guitar lessons. As I previously mentioned I believe that every student is unique in how they learn, their musical goals, the time they have to devote to music, etc. Having the luxury of teaching one to one enables me to teach the individual. In addition to teaching conventional music theory, reading, writing, et al, I also teach improvisation and playing by ear. As a strong believer of the KIPP mission and vision, I work hard to instill the truths spoken to me behind the process of getting to and through college, constantly reminded by the words of Marianne Williamson that “our greatest fear is not that we are inadequate, but that we are powerful beyond measure.” There are 2 things that I believe in regards to education: 1) All students can/will learn. 2) It is not whether or not you are smart, but rather HOW you are smart, citing Gardner's Theory of Intelligence. I'm an energetic, passionate and motivated instructor strongly committed to the belief that everyone is musical. I teach students of all ages and levels, focusing on repertoire, technique, theory, sight-reading and improvisation.  My special "niche" is teaching young children.    My students (ages 3-6)  embark on a musical adventure with Beethoven Bear and Mozart Mouse, filled with singing, listening, music appreciation, movement and rhythm activities.  Students also participate in drum circles, play boom whackers, experience parachute play and ukulele playing. I do this because I love music, and I love helping others love music. So, while I do want the students to be very proficient musicians, I am mostly concerned in helping cultivate the student's passion for music. After all, if the student doesn't love the music, it's not near as urgent to practice and produce results. The love of the music is what drives the practice.
