As a teacher my goal is not to simply teach a student how to play or sing a certain song. My goal is to teach my students how to use the discipline of music to help them to develop their character. To that end I emphasize learning music fundamentals well and being able to put them into practice playing or singing in public at every opportunity. I also believe that playing with other musicians helps students to solidify their skills so I encourage them to play in an ensemble at every opportunity. Read More
Instruments: Guitar, Music, Electric Guitar, Classical Guitar, Acoustic Guitar
I will sit with you, one on one, and introduce you to your guitar. We will string the gutar, tune the guitar, and learn the parts of the guitar together. Next, we will begin memorizing the fretboard and where all of the notes are located along every string. Finger and hand positioning will be next, so you can begin strengthening exercises in preparation for playing scale patterns on the neck of the guitar. Read More
Instruments: Guitar, Violin, Saxophone, Bass Guitar, Banjo, Ukulele, Mandolin, Electric Violin, Fiddle
For beginning students who have no experience on their instrument, I usually spend a fair chunk of time working on basic technique using books like the Essential Elements series or Greg Horne's similar books for folk instruments. I usually combine the book material with other songs/pieces relevant to each student's interests. For more advanced students, I usually find a mix of repetoire relevant to their interests and technical exercises for them to refine and develop technique. Read More

As I continued to do this, I found that I loved seeing my students progress and become wonderful musicians. So as the passion grew, I began to teach lessons outside of church, and it has continued to grow in the years since. Read More

I believe in learning the fundamentals but I believe that experience should be enjoyable. That's why we "play" music in the first place! This can mean different things to different students but a focus on positive reinforcement and encouragement toward specific musical goals will always be the guiding factor in my approach. I also encourage students to take ownership of the musical skills learned by experimenting with composition and improvisation. Read More
