I'm a guitar instructor from the East Texas area who began playing at the age of 13 years old and have been playing now for about 20 years. I've always enjoyed playing solo guitar (mainly fingerstyle), although I have also been in several ensembles during my time in high school and college. After that I received a bachelors degree in Jazz Studies from the University of North Texas and then a masters degree in trumpet performance from the University of Texas at Arlington. I keep a busy schedule as a freelance musician and perform regularly with the Dallas Jazz Orchestra. I also do the occasional the tour with different groups. I never assume a student cannot succeed. Progress comes quickly with a variety of songs supported by successive exercises and methodology. Parental involvement is highly recommended and I try to work with parents to determine motivational techniques. I have found that students need a regular practice time 4 to 5 times a week, even if it is only a few minutes at a time; but, hopefully, we can find music that they like to sit down and play. I have a collection of different books for children and for older students we can dive right in to a certain style. I got my first guitar in the summer of 2001 and found the guitar was a great hobby when I was bored and couldn't find anything else to do. My passion for the guitar grew exponentially when I started getting better at it.
