First, I find out what the student wants to focus on more, whether it is notation and musical theory, or learning a few basic chords, strumming patterns and such, to be able to play their favorite songs. Stopping a jam to nail down a part can be frustrating and slow the momentum of a jam session, but I've always felt it is imperative to keep everyone knowledgeable and in pocket.
