The best thing as a music teacher personally is to see of my students develop a love for music. It is also important that each individual student will improve at his or her own pace and his or her own level. I will encourage this by making realistic goals for all my students at each individual lesson. Telling the individual student what they have accomplished musically and what they have learned musically at the music lesson will help give the individual student to want to learn more about music. For beginners (piano) , 5 years and above, Hal Leonard, John Thompson, play, rest, play the piano together, For vocal students, I start by listening first to any song that they would like to sing, or find a song that will fit according to his/ her voice and make singing fun (at the beginning) and less stressing. Overall I make sure that my student is happy after a session. I hold annual recitals because that's where is see the ultimate produce of a one year hard practice. Read More

As I said, all of my students have individual experiences with music and learning! The most important thing to me is progress and passion, at any pace and in any style. A big part of my lessons is setting goals together and checking in on those goals every couple of weeks. Another important thing I try to keep at the center of our lessons is the idea that we only can get as much out of these lessons as we put in. Read More

In 1998, I began teaching saxophone lessons in Houston, TX. I have taught saxophone lessons in the Dallas-Fort Worth area since 2008. My students were in middle school, high school, college. and adults. In addition, I have taught students who wanted to start a new hobby or were interested in returning to an instrument that they played in the past. In 2011, I began studying with Joe Eckert at TCU. At TCU, I coached the saxophone quartets, lead rehearsals for the jazz ensemble saxophone section, performed classical saxophone recitals, and performed with the jazz ensemble. Read More

Teaching piano is a great joy. My goal is to help students develop the skill to make playing music fun and satisfying, whether their goal is to become a professional or to simply enjoy playing for its own sake. I've worked for several arts agencies (Arts Horizons, Healing Arts Initiative, CREATE) so I've had the privilege to teach music in a variety of settings. While teaching in a classroom setting is immensely satisfying, seeing individual students grow in proficiency, dexterity. concentration, is an even bigger thrill. Read More

I started taking piano lessons at the age of 5. As a I continued to take piano lessons, I eventually in middle school began to study with a professor from Julliard until entering the university. I graduated from the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University with a Bachelors of Music degree in piano performance. However, I started teaching right away and have enjoyed teaching for over 40 years. I have continued performing as well and enjoy the combination of spreading the beauty of music thru teaching and performing! Read More
Instruments: Piano Voice Music
For young beginning piano students, I typically start with John Thompson's Modern Course for the Piano: The First Grade Book and move up throughout the series from there. For young beginning voice students, I start with lessons on proper breath support, sight-singing, intonation exercises, and warm-ups to shape their voice. For both my piano and voice students, I establish a strong, classical foundation that is built on fundamentals to get their instrument working properly and then branch out to other genres from there. What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
It is all about committing 1-2 hrs a day to practicing. Consistency is the key to steady progress. It is sometimes difficult to stay focused and or motivated. It's also difficult to find time in your schedule to practice everyday. So if you can find at least and hour or two of free time, you will be able to steadily work on your instrument. You have to factor in the time to also just play your instrument freely for the pure sake of having fun. I also think that staying inspired is a great way to keep up our motivation and interest in our instrument.
How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
If your child is asking about getting an instrument than it's probably time to consider looking into starting lessons. If anyone, especially a child, has interest in music it should always be supported and encouraged. Music helps children with social skills, self esteem, mathematics, problem solving, etc...just to name a few positive benefits. In fact, I'm not sure of any negative aspects of music!
Music is the gift that keeps giving. Even if your child is young he/she can gain so much from a musical experience. Whether that's seeing a concert or meeting with a teacher 1 on 1.
When will I start to see results?
Results are all based on meeting specific goals. I think of progress as a slow and steady method. There will be moments when new ideas are easy to understand and easy to play on the instrument. At other times in our progress the results may seem to take more time.
But, unfortunately, results are really based on the students ability to understand the lesson mentally. Then the student must put in the personal time to practice the lesson at least one hour a day. Which is just a safe guard in case you miss a couple days, which happens, even to professionals like myself.
Did you have a teacher that inspired you to go into music? How did they inspire you?
I wouldn't say it took someone to inspire me to go into music. I knew at a young age that I wanted to pursue music. Although I can say I did have a lot of positive people who supported me. My parents were especially encouraging when it came to music. I heard a lot a sad stories of kids hoping to study an instrument but their parents refused to allow them to pursue anything related to music or the arts.
I did have a couple teachers in Middle School and High School who actually wrote special permission slips for us to leave lunch/recess or study hall to play music together in the auditorium.
