My Music teaching experience dates back to my Junior High School days, being only 14 years old, as I began teahing other students who played and performed in school, along with me, and also instructed some of their younger siblings. Encouraing regular practice on a consistent daily basis, is one of the key points that I emphasize to all of my students, as it produces student progress and aquisation of essential Musical literature. I began studying music at age 10.  By twelve years old I began serious study and practice on the piano.  By 15 I was playing weekly church services on both organ and piano.  I attended both Rutgers College and Berklee School of Music in Boston, where I continued my studies in piano, jazz composition and arranging, voice and performance. My method is unique in that I get students to improvise and compose their own music right away. I do this using the latest musicological research on partimento, an Italian method from the classical period which has been demonstrated to get students as young as 6 years old to improvise sonatas at the piano. This is how Mozart and Beethoven became child prodigies, and I believe that teachers should get back to teaching their students this way! Read More

I hold two degrees in music from Montclair State College, a BA and an MA in music. My primary instrument was piano and my secondary was violin. I studied piano with Murray Present, pupil of Josef and Rosinna Lhevinne at Julliard, working with him for both degrees and thereafter. My violin instructor was Dr. Jerome Landsman, member of the first Heifetz Master Class at the University of Southern California at Berklee. Read More

Most importantly, we are all here to have fun and enjoy playing music.  I always encourage my students to take risks, have a laugh and ask questions.  I work to build the student's confidence in their playing, ability to practice well, ability to perform in public and ability to be comfortable making mistakes.  We all progress at various rates and progress at any level is an accomplishment that each student should be proud to achieve.  If a student or parent of a student expresses their interested to move forward in a serious capacity, I am more than happy to encourage such movement. What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
It is all about committing 1-2 hrs a day to practicing. Consistency is the key to steady progress. It is sometimes difficult to stay focused and or motivated. It's also difficult to find time in your schedule to practice everyday. So if you can find at least and hour or two of free time, you will be able to steadily work on your instrument. You have to factor in the time to also just play your instrument freely for the pure sake of having fun. I also think that staying inspired is a great way to keep up our motivation and interest in our instrument.

How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
If your child is asking about getting an instrument than it's probably time to consider looking into starting lessons. If anyone, especially a child, has interest in music it should always be supported and encouraged. Music helps children with social skills, self esteem, mathematics, problem solving, etc...just to name a few positive benefits. In fact, I'm not sure of any negative aspects of music! Music is the gift that keeps giving. Even if your child is young he/she can gain so much from a musical experience. Whether that's seeing a concert or meeting with a teacher 1 on 1.

When will I start to see results?
Results are all based on meeting specific goals. I think of progress as a slow and steady method. There will be moments when new ideas are easy to understand and easy to play on the instrument. At other times in our progress the results may seem to take more time. But, unfortunately, results are really based on the students ability to understand the lesson mentally. Then the student must put in the personal time to practice the lesson at least one hour a day. Which is just a safe guard in case you miss a couple days, which happens, even to professionals like myself.

Did you have a teacher that inspired you to go into music? How did they inspire you?
I wouldn't say it took someone to inspire me to go into music. I knew at a young age that I wanted to pursue music. Although I can say I did have a lot of positive people who supported me. My parents were especially encouraging when it came to music. I heard a lot a sad stories of kids hoping to study an instrument but their parents refused to allow them to pursue anything related to music or the arts. I did have a couple teachers in Middle School and High School who actually wrote special permission slips for us to leave lunch/recess or study hall to play music together in the auditorium.
