As mentioned in my methods, I customize my lesson plans based on my students goals and needs as a musician. I try to balance out the importance of theory and understanding music notation with having fun and working on songs or techniques that the students particularly desires to play. I take the time to ensure that the student thoroughly understands concepts and songs before moving on. Though I also will take breaks to try something new to keep the student actively engaged. I do, however, allow diversion and conversation in lessons. If there is a song that may explain the musical idea, we will stop and listen. If a young child wants to relay a story from school they thought of because of our practice, I will stop and listen. I may also speak in depth about musical history, style, or even the psychology of music. I think this combination draws students into the mind of a musician, and gets them to start thinking like one. Over the years, I've taken lessons from instructors who had an array of teaching styles. While in high school, I was taught through intimidation and was scared into learning, which is something I was able to handle. This methods can actually turn students away from music which is the main reason dislike approach. Students should be comfortable and relaxed when entering a lesson. This not only creates a positive learning environment for the student but helps create a relationship between instructor and student that only helps the growth of both individuals. Read More

I am a laid back teacher, but I make sure all students behave and learn. I love when the students enjoy what they are doing, and when I enjoy what I am doing. It's a relationship that you build. I expect the students to practice their craft. I continue to learn as I teach as well. Inspiration is very important. The inspired students are special for they know what they want to accomplish. I love the learning process and to see students progress through the stages of learning an instrument. I taught myself to play the piano before I started formal lessons. I began playing the saxophone at the same time I took up the piano. I entered my undergraduate program in 1992, majoring in music education with the saxophone and piano as my principle instruments. During my studies at the University of South Alabama, a new program was started in MIDI and I attended an extra year to master digital audio. Read More

For beginner students, I like to use the Faber books or the Thompson method for piano. I also encourage students of all ages to share what they enjoy listening to and incorporate songs they enjoy as early as possible. As students progress I get into more in depth concepts in music theory and improvisation, to provide a foundation in the language of contemporary music. For more advanced students, I try to play another instrument along with them sometimes to provide a taste of what it is like to make music in a group setting. Read More

I'm pretty laidback and like to make the student feel comfortable. If given the opportunity I can definitely launch into some pretty passionate talks about music , to really reach out and teach my students some really cool things. At the same time though, i don't like to bore any student with certain topics if they aren't ready and willing to learn these things. It really depends on the student. I like to encourage playing or jamming in the lessons as well so that we can apply different things we are learning to actual music. Read More
