For the more advanced students, I introduce the fundamentals of playing jazz piano as well. I have my voice students sing through repertoire in the styles of their choice in order to have a better understanding of how their unique voice functions. As an educator, I believe it is important to continue school music instruction into private flute lessons. I like to communicate with a child's school music teacher in the beginning of flute lessons, so that I can keep music terminology consistent for students, as well as reinforce concepts they're already learning (while expanding musically of course!). I like to have students keep a lesson packet where progress is documented, along with a journal--I find that reflecting for five minutes after a practice session (things that went well, things you need help on, questions), are important tools when striving for success. Many true, albeit arranged, baroque, romantic, and classical piano pieces are featured without a lot of fluff and fanfare. This may be an ideal method for more serious, self-motivated students.
