For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Alfred's Basic Piano Library or Piano Adventures Faber method. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. This could include jazz, classical or pop music. I center the way I teach technique around what "feels" good to a student, especially older students who have already started, to make sure that we are able to prevent and respond to injuries. So, I start with stretching and will frequently refer back to exercises that are meant to integrate physical ease into playing. Aside from that, I try to balance a consistent routine/expectation of things I want to cover (asking for things a week in advance, always playing a scale at the start of the lesson, etc), while also meeting a student where they are at on the day. After I graduated from law school in Thailand, I started teaching 2 branches of KPN and I also provided private lessons to students at home. I also believe that singing is highly physical and I help all of my students with physical exercises to help them become more aware of their bodies and build strength in certain places while releasing others, especially in the belly and abdomen (a place singers often hold so much tension). These exercises are based mostly on Qi-Gong moves which also facilitate smooth, even breathing.
