I have been teaching voice lessons for almost ten years to students of all ages, skill levels, and preferred genres. Many of my students have been successful on stage, in auditions, competitions, and in gaining acceptance into music schools across the country. My focus is to guide my student in finding their own voice in a healthy way. Every student has a different goal in taking voice lessons. For young beginning students (usually ages 5-7) I would begin with the Hal Leonard Piano Lessons Book series. After I feel that the student can properly read music and understand fundamentals of the piano I will begin to incorporate other methods such as Piano Adventures and the Bastien series. I received my DMA in composition in May 16, 2014. I've been teaching since graduating high school part but I've been teaching consistently for the last 5 years since graduating college. I am always exploring different genres,techniques, and ideas of what music is, which has made me a good all around musician. I am a big fan of making things fun because music to me is fun to play. My preferred method of teaching for beginner students is my own adaptation of the Thompson method with strong emphasis on theory and technique. A study of intervalic relationships, chords and progressions combined with terminology, sight reading, ear training and form will provide the student with skills which will allow them to play any style and genre of music they desire. Although the Suzuki method seems to be popular today, I have discovered many short comings of this pedagogical approach and often renders a good pianist limited in their capabilities as a well rounded musician. My teaching experience started when I was in high school. A lot of children in my neighborhood wanted to learn violin and piano, I suddenly became the neighborhood teacher at just 17! After college I continued teaching privately. I have also taught in public and privet schools. My main passion in teaching is to help ANYONE who wants the gift of playing an instrument. For beginning students I run through a personalized lesson plan that caters to the students learning abilities and their pace of learning. I strongly believe in the use of a metronome and the versatility of percussion rudiments so I usually have most beginning students start there. As they progress through their concept of time and technique has improved I will then suggest to parents (if the student is interested) that their child moves on to the drum set where I bring them through the Time Functioning book by Gary Chaffee.
