As a multi-instrumentalists, I use a cross disciplinary approach even when a student is only learning one instrument. I do make use of method books for beginners, and the specific book depends upon the instrument, but I have my own methods and materials which I utilize in my lessons. Building a repertoire is encouraged, and I use the material to assist in instructing in theory and musical communication. My students are taught to be self-sufficient, by way of practice, study, and cultivating an "ear." Read More

There are many method books available, one that I have used is "Piano Adventures" by Nancy and Randall Faber. There are many series of books now available with varied styles of music from beginning to intermediate levels such as those by Martha Mier, Robert Vandall and Christopher. Very young students and sometimes even those who are older have difficulty understanding musical notation and it is useful to teach them by rote while also improving reading skills. Read More
Instruments: Flute Music
I have been playing the flute for more than 40 years. I began teaching in-person private flute lessons in 2006 and quickly developed a love for inspiring others to develop their musical talents. By focusing on a student's strengths and passions first, I am able to draw out the inner genius that each individual possesses inside and tap into that energy to fuel their success. I always start with the classics, because I believe that it creates the strongest foundation upon which to build skills. Read More

I have taught since I was in college. I regularly taught music theory and piano to non keyboardists at the special music school. In addition I have worked with students of all backgrounds. Some want to learn how to record a song, some want to play a song they love, some just want to make great music and I help students achieve all of these goals. I have performed at Carnegie Hall and at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington DC. Read More

I believe that a passion for music is something to be celebrated and nurtured. It's my job to help it grow. I still remember the first time I was able to play my favorite song on guitar. That feeling never leaves you. Instruments are hard, but with consistent practice and enough inspiration, I believe every student can achieve a level of proficiency. I follow the students in the directions they are inspired to go. Read More

When it comes to teaching piano I use the faber method. I like the combination of theory, ear training, and sight-reading that it offers as those are fundamental skills to be a good musician. If they are able to successfully complete those books, I go into solo repertoire and work on fingering techniques as well as reading music off a lead sheet as you never know when you want to play something and the sheet music is not available. I believe in allowing each student to decide their level of engagement with music. While some prefer to simply learn the basics of an instrument, others want to delve into more in-depth musical concepts and theory, and no one approach in more relevant than another. I look to show beginning or growing musicians the feeling of accomplishment that learning a new piece of music provides. Through exploring the songs and music that a student is most engaged with, as well as classics in a variety of genres, students gain a sense of how theory and/or techniques craft the music they love and know and that they, too, can create music that might one day be studied by future students.
