I have found that the basics are the most important part of music. Even issues in more advanced players can be addressed by filling the gaps in a students knowledge of the fundamentals. I also strongly emphasise a student's ear training as that really opens up the instrument to them, allowing for more intuitive playing and improved creativity. I tend to cater to the students needs, and can also create simple backing tracks for students to practice the concepts that have been covered in the lesson. Read More

I use a variety of methods depending on the level of the student. I certainly cover all the fundamentals and show how they relate to music. Generally I like to ask the student what kind of music they like and that's how we get started. Read More

I love teaching beginners of any age including special needs students. Most importantly, I will help you learn to play the music you LOVE and stay motivated. I specialize in Adult Beginners and am happy to teach students aged 9 to 109! I worked as a professional musician in New York City for several years and played in numerous Salsa bands, a Ska band—and small classical groups.    I also led a group called The Triple Trouble Trombone Trio and a 12 piece Salsa band called “Profundo” as well as a 9 piece Salsa/Middle Easter R&B Hybrid band called “Havana Gila” Read More

For beginning students I prefer to use either Alfred's, Mel Bay, or Hal Leonard method books. I generally stay away from method books that use guitar tablature because I find that student will prefer to read the tablature instead of standard musical notation. Tablature is a good way to easily show how guitar parts are played, but is not useful when teaching standard notation, music theory, harmony, etc. In addition to using a method book, I will also teach the student popular songs, which is a great way to start teaching chords and song structure in addition to keeping the lesson fun and the student engaged. I believe that it is important to take the time to get to know each student's needs and to set realistic goals that will set them up for long-term success. By paying attention to what inspires the student and how they take in information most effectively, I can successfully tailor my instruction. I am a fairly laid back person, and understand that my students have wide-ranging activities and priorities. I will always find a way to use the lesson time effectively regardless of the level of preparation that a student is able to commit to in a given week. Read More

There are few things in life that bring me more joy than seeing students develop a passion for expressing themselves through music! My experience has shown me that every student is different, and I feel it is my job as a teacher to introduce students to resources and materials that will serve both their interests and needs. It's been shown that our brains have the ability to change throughout our entire lives, andthink of students' milestones in musicianship as developments both on their instruments and in their minds. Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music! Therefore, it's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I like to go slow at first and see how things go lesson by lesson. I never like to challenge my students too much in the beginning because it can be rather frustrating to continue learning music. I also believe theory is very important and will ALWAYS include this in my teaching. Read More

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
