Overview:
I'm a native of South Korea, and have been actively performing with various chamber ensembles and orchestras across the East coast in the United States. I have appeared as a soloist with the New World Symphony Orchestra in Busan, South Korea, Busan Clarinet Choir and the TV and Radio Symphony Orchestra in St. Petersburg, Russia. I have also performed as a member of numerous ensembles in Canada, Italy, Japan and in South Korea. I won a top prize at the Korea Clarinet Association Ensemble Competition which included a performance at the Seoul Art Center, a second prize at the National Music Competition by Busan Music Association of Education and was a winner of the school's annual concerto competition which included a performance as a soloist with Pusan National University Symphony Orchestra. I earned an award for outstanding student upon graduation from New York University where I hold a Masterxe2x80x99s degree as a scholarship recipient. As a member of Trio Mirabile since 2012, I was the first place winner at the American Protege International Competition of Romantic Music which included a performance at the Carnegie Hall, New York where I was awarded with the Judges' Distinction. I was also invited to the artist-in-residence at the Banff Centre. I was also elected to a membership in the national music honor society Pi Kappa Lambda. I perform regularly as a guest solo artist with Amici String Quartet in South Korea. My upcoming concerts include Artie Shaw clarinet concerto with Doctorxe2x80x99s Symphonic Band and Mozart Quintet with Amici String Quartet in South Korea, 2015. In June 2014, I joined the faculty of Boston University Tanglewood Institute where I have been an assistant for Ethan Sloanexe2x80x99s Clarinet Workshop since 2009 as well as performing recitals on the faculty concert series. I hold a doctor of musical arts degree from Boston University, where I have worked with Ethan Sloane as a teaching assistant and as a scholarship recipient. My former teachers include David Krakauer, Esther Lamneck, Larry Guy and Woo-Young Chung.
EXPERIENCE
With almost 20 years of music-related experience, and over 10 years as a teacher, I am confident in my ability to become an asset to your educational institution. As a versatile individual, I have had a varied teaching experience including a teaching assistantship at Boston University and Boston University Tanglewood Institute (BUTI) for 5 years. Especially with the experience of 5 years at BUTI, I have had the opportunity to work with students from not only various cultures but also different levels. I also have been a coach for clarinet sectional rehearsals at Boston University Concert Band and a private clarinet teacher for all age groups. In my undergraduate years in South Korea, I have taught students from second grade to ninth grade at private music school while holding an orchestra manager position at Busan National University. Through the experiences, I have been fortunate enough to educate a diverse cultural group of elementary, middle school, high school, college level students and adult students. Further, I have learned how to communicate effectively to both student's parents and the academic organizations. At the same time I have the ability to build up my own teaching method to expand and improve student's talent and interest on making music.
METHODS USED
As a wind player, especially a clarinet player, the most important aspect on clarinet playing is having good sound. I paciently teach each student to begin playing the clarinet with their own sound. Then, I start with all the basic fundamentals which all clarinetist require to learn in the beginning period while teaching them a music theory and history. Once the students are feeling comfortable with thier own instruments, I go further with serious works. -My class is goal oriented. Most of my students are participating at NEC Prep, other youth orchestras and wind ensemble.
LESSON STYLE
My teaching philosophy is to instill a sense of music appreciation, while teaching students about the technical aspects of music. Furthermore, I seek to expand studentxe2x80x99s interest by understanding each student and applying multi-purpose activities according to each individual needs. Therefore, I am able to reach out to each student, enlighten them with joy of finding their own music in their heart and guide them to learn the ability to listen to the music and to make music on their own. I am truly opened to students who are eager to excel themselves as well as collaborating with their parents in order to resolve any obstacles they might encounter within their music education.
