I am a flexible teacher, and am able to cater my teaching style to the students' goals, level, and learning style. I of course want all my students to have a strong foundations of fundamental flute playing, which starts with strong technique and sound.      Nothing makes me happier than a satisifed student who can play better than I could at their age! Everyone has different expectations; some want to become proficient, while others want to become virtuosos, and I frame my lessons around the student's goals. The student is never talked down to or berated, and always encouraged; music is hard enough without negative comments. For beginning students who are children I typically start with a book. We can pair that with playing different musical games and improvisation. For beginning adults I like to pick some simple songs that resonate and work towards learning them. I believe strongly in the diversity of the student. I realize that not everyone likes books. For beginners, I start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements and Suzuki Book 1 for cello. These books give a firm structure and introduce classical pieces as well as familiar tunes. Once we finish these two method books, I focus on what the student is more interested in. Are they geared towards classical, or do they really like showtunes? Whatever their interest may be, I find suitable repertoire and continue to challenge and strenghten their abilities. Read More
