Master of Music - University of North Texas Bachelor of Music - University of North Texas
Awards:
Grammy Nominee - 2009 Bill Collins Jazz Trumpet Scholarship - 2004-2008
Overview:
Clynt is a professional trumpet player and freelancer in the New York City metro area. He plays jazz, R&B, pop, latin and classical music. He is a featured soloist and section player in jazz and commercial settings, as well as a horn writer and arranger. You can find hm playing all over the city and the east coast in any of these settings.
As a studio musician, writer, and arranger, He also relies heavily on his knowledge of the piano and guitar. Multi-instrumental relationships are a large part of his teaching style.
EXPERIENCE
A Texas native, Clynt grew up exposed to a variety of music. The southern influence of blues, gospel, country, and jazz were a huge part of his musical upbringing. While his formal training was largely in classical music for many years, he also remembers learning his first tunes note-by-not from his father (a jazz and country musician) in their living room in Texas when he was not out of elementary school.
Having experienced both formal and informal training methods all of his life, he is adept at providing either - or any ratio - of the two to a student in need. SIght-reading, technical refinement, and practice are instructional strengths - as are ear-training and music comprehension.
He taught brass and music theory for several years in the public school system in Texas before relocating to New York City. He has led brass and jazz masterclasses across the country. In New York he has built a private studio teaching trumpet, piano, guitar, theory, and even tuba and low brass.
METHODS USED
I teach strong instrumental fundamentals, along with music theory comprehension, sight-reading, and ear training. I also like to emphasize ensemble playing using instrumental duets. I use appropriate level texts based on the student's experience first and age level second but always teach from what will make either younger students or adults feel comfortable. Fun is a must in one's progression but focus is key to success. I've helped students win concerto and ensemble awards and have also brought adults into the professional-level playing world through lessons.
LESSON STYLE
Sharing the joy of making music has been a passion of mine since my undergraduate days. I've been lucky enough to have had some of the most fulfilling students along my journey since then. I enjoy beginning students and their progression and growth and have seen some of my younger students granted music scholarships and even music degrees along the way. I've also had the pleasure of working with some of the finest adult beginners since living here in New York. It's never too late to start if you have the drive!
Whatever your goals may be, we'll focus but also enjoy music.
