When I meet new students, I start by figuring out where they are on their journey, and I meet them there. I approach each lesson uniquely, because we are all different and learn in different ways. I teach with a combination of Lesson and Theory books, usually Alfred's Basic, and we will focus on healthy playing technique. I understand that Lesson and Theory books are not always the most interesting, and I supplement materials by teaching chords so students can learn pop songs of their choosing as well. Read More

My methods for teaching are directly linked to the desires of the student and what they hope to achieve by learning how to play an instrument. If a student is particularly interested in songwriting and composition, I'd be more inclined to emphasize the principles or harmony, counterpoint, structure and written music, whereas if a student is more interested in becoming an instrumentalist for a band etc., I'd be more inclined to emphasize rudiments, scale exercises and a jamming mentality. To sing freely one must feel safe and at liberty to try things, to make sounds which in other places are frowned upon. I aim to provide a place where students can try things and receive positive reinforcement for what works, rather than judgement about what is wrong.
