My teaching experience dates back to my college days, as I began teaching private lessons part-time 10 years ago, and have been consistently teaching students in my home studio for the last 5 years. Encouraging regular practice on a consistent schedule is one of the key points I like to emphasize for younger students, as it tends to help the student progress and gain a passion for the instrument. My favorite moments while teaching is the light bulb moments, for these to occure lessons are goal based and created around the students level of exsperiece, future goals, and personal goals. In the first lesson we set mini goals for each lesson, medium goals for the month, and large goals for something we want to work towards or a up and coming competition. I use a positive environment to help student feel good about their accomplishments, but also have them discover areas of improvement by recording them or asking them what they feel they did well and what they feel they need to work on. I listen to the student's music selections. While he/she plays, I observe him/her how this student is adapting to the instrument. After his/her performance, I offer constructive criticism pointing out steps to adapt himself/herself to the instrument. I also encourage and push for attentive listening for tone quality. This is very important no matter the level of students. The way to listen for tone quality is not only seating straight and at the center of the keyboard, but also understand when and how to use the bony part of the fingers(closer to nails) versus the fleshy part of fingers on the opposite side of nails. For about a year I have taught the students (from the ages of 10-50) trumpet and piano at the Oxford School of music. Ive got song with the students, but still maintained the get through the lessons. I tried my best teaching them what I know about the trumpet, even though I mostly taught the piano (with the best of my knowledge). There was one time that I remember before the pandemic occurred, on October, I gave a trumpet sectional to the Oxford Jazz band teaching them the fundamentals of the blues and identifying the melody, rhythm, and harmony (form for which to improvise on).
